The Civil War was the most deadliest and most important event in the nation's history. President Abraham Lincoln watched the action from Fort Stevens and came under fire from Confederate sharpshooters. The infant Confederacy had already requested 100,000 men before the capture of Fort Sumter in April and added another 400,000 the following month.
